Origami 5-Pointed Star Step-by-Step Instructions

• Difficulty: Easy – Beginner Level 2
• Folding time: 10 minutes

Step 1

Start with the white side of the paper facing up in a diamond position. Fold and unfold along the vertical diagonal.

Step 2

Fold the bottom left and bottom right edges in to meet the centerline.

Step 3

Fold the top corner down to meet the left corner, then unfold. Repeat for the right corner.

Step 4

Make an inside reverse fold on the right corner area. The top flap will rest over the left flap.

Step 5

Untuck the left flap so it sits on top.

Step 6

Reinforce the creases you already made (2 valley folds and 1 mountain fold).

Step 7

Repeat Steps 1 to 6 four more times. You’ll end up with 5 identical units.

Note: From this step on, I’m switching to 5×5 cm (2×2 in) kami so it fits better in the camera frame.

Step 8

Take two units. Slide the triangular flap of one unit behind the right flap of the other unit.

Step 9

Tuck the triangular flap of the right unit in between the top layers of the left unit’s right flap.

Step 10

Repeat the same connection three more times with the remaining units to complete the star.

Folding tip: Use clips to keep the units in place while assembling. It helps keep things aligned!

The most delicate part is getting a clean hexagon, but don’t worry, we show you how to make one from either rectangular paper or square paper in our tutorials.

Try it with white, translucent, or duo-colored paper to highlight its elegant symmetry.

Take your time with the folds and enjoy the process. It’s a great project for slowing down and focusing.

Origami Snowflake Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1

Fold and unfold the three diagonal lines from corner to opposite corner.

Fold each corner to the center point, then unfold. Then, turn the paper over.

Folding tip: Make sure your fold line runs exactly from corner to corner.

Step 4

Reverse fold along the dashed crease. Repeat for the five remaining corners, then turn the paper over.

Step 5

Fold the top right corner to the center point.

Step 6

Swivel fold along the existing creases.

Step 7

Repeat Step 6 for the five remaining corners.

Step 8

Squash fold one of the top flaps created in Step 7.

Step 9

Squash fold the remaining five flaps.

Fold the right flap over to the left.

Fold the left corners of the two flaps to the center point, then unfold.

This star involves a fun and engaging folding process. Most of the work is in the precreasing, where you prepare the paper with precise mountain and valley folds, followed by a satisfying final collapse that brings the star to life.

Originally featured in his book Twist Origami 2 (ねじり折り 2), this model is challenging but still accessible for determined beginners.

Origami 6-Pointed Star Step-by-Step Instructions

• Difficulty: Easy – Beginner Level 5
• Folding time: 10-15 minutes

Step 1

Start with the white side of the paper facing up. Then, fold and unfold the diagonals.

Step 2

Fold in half vertically, but crease only near the edges to create reference points. Then, unfold.

Step 3

Bring the top-left corner to the closest reference point and fold along the dotted line. Your crease should start from the bottom left corner.

Repeat this step for the bottom-right corner.

Step 4

Bring the top-left corner down and fold along the dotted line, using the existing crease as a guide. The top left edge should align with the diagonal line. Repeat this step for the bottom-right corner.

Step 5

Fold and unfold the left and right corners to the middle point.

Step 6

Fold and unfold both hexagon diagonals, using the reference colored lines as a guide.

Step 7

Rotate 45 degrees counterclockwise and turn the model over.

Step 8

Bring the top corner to the right corner. The left edge should align with the horizontal line. Crease only where the fold intersects with the vertical line to create a new reference point.

Then, mirror this step for the bottom corner.

Step 9

Bring the right corner inward to meet the new reference points and fold and unfold along the dotted lines.

Step 10

Bring the left corner inward to meet the new reference points and fold and unfold along the dotted lines.

Step 11

Bring the top and bottom corners to the reference points. Then, fold and unfold along the dotted lines.

Step 12

Collapse the model along the existing creases, as shown on the diagram.

Step 13

Pleat the top flap along the existing creases and tuck it under the surrounding flaps.

Step 14

Pleat the remaining flap, but this time, tuck it over the two flaps on either side. This will lock the model and complete the final star point.

To get started, you’ll need long, thin strips of paper—about 10 to 11 inches (25 cm) long and 3/4 of an inch (2 cm) wide for standard-sized stars. Thinner strips create smaller stars, while wider ones result in larger stars.

The key to a perfect paper star is keeping your folds neat and tight so it will puff up beautifully at the end.

Origami Lucky Star Step-by-Step Instructions

• Difficulty: Easy – Beginner Level 2
• Folding time: Under 5 minutes

Step 1

Start with a long, narrow strip of paper. The exact measurements are not important. Form a loop at one end of the strip.

Pull the loop through, leaving only a small strip of paper at the end.

Step 2

Flatten the loop so that it forms a pentagonal shape.

Step 3

Tuck the remaining small strip of paper under the two top layers of the loop.

Step 4

Flip the model around.

Step 5

Fold the pentagonal portion down, aligning the top left edge with the width of the long strip.

Step 6

Fold down the pentagonal portion again, aligning the top right edge with the strip. Note that the edge being aligned is different from that of Step 5.

Step 7

Continue to repeat Steps 5 and 6, alternating the edges that are lined up. Stop when there is only a small strip remaining.

Step 8

Tuck the small remaining strip under the top two layers, similar to Step 3.

Step 9

And now, the fun part! Pinch at the corners to puff up the star.

Grab any origami paper you have—colorful, patterned, or even a simple white sheet—and let’s fold together this wonderful envelope.

Origami Envelope Step-by-Step Instructions

• Difficulty: Easy – Beginner Level 3
• Folding time: 10 minutes

Step 1

Start with the white side of the paper facing up. Fold in half diagonally, then unfold.

Folding tip: Don’t rush the first creases when you’re making the envelope. They’ll set the tone for how the whole model turns out.

Step 2

Fold in half diagonally the other way, then unfold.

Step 3

Fold two opposite corners inward so their tips meet at the center point.

Step 4

Fold the top corner down to the center point, but only press lightly at the intersection with the diagonal to create a small pinch crease. Then unfold.

Step 5

Rotate the paper 45 degrees counterclockwise.

Step 6

Fold the bottom corner up to meet the pinch mark from Step 4, then unfold.

Step 7

Fold the bottom corner up to meet the crease made in Step 6.

Step 8

Fold the bottom left section upward, aligning its left edge with the crease made in Step 6.

Step 9

Repeat on the right side.

Step 10

Unfold the folds made in Steps 7 to 9.

Step 11

Fold along the dotted lines, using the existing creases as guides.

Folding tip: This is the most tricky fold of this model. However, you can make it very easily before unfolding the model during the previous step. Just turn the model and create a light precrease with a mountain fold at the level of the valley fold shown in step 11. You can then unfold the model as shown in step 10 and create your valley fold by reversing the mountain fold you just created. Crease well, and here are your perfect folds for step 11. Let me know in the comments if you’d like a video about this tip!

Step 12

Fold the bottom corner up, using the creases made in Step 11 as guides.

Step 13

Collapse the paper along the existing creases. Refer to the diagram to identify valley and mountain folds.

Note: The square flap of the collapsed model is positioned on top of the two side flaps.

Step 14

Open the top left flap while releasing the one trapped in the bottom left corner.

Note: The top flap should remain raised and should not rest on the bottom flap yet.

Step 15

Close the top left flap over the flap beneath it. The mountain fold follows an existing crease, while the valley fold creates a new crease.

Step 16

Repeat Steps 14 to 15 on the top right flap.

Step 17

Make a mountain fold along the dotted line at the midpoint of the square. Swing the square backward without creasing through it.

Step 18

Fold the entire bottom flap upwards along the existing crease.

Step 19

Gently open the left flap that is trapped under the bottom left flap. Don’t flatten it yet.

Step 20

Tuck the corner of the flap underneath the square.

Step 21

Repeat Steps 19 to 20 on the right side.

Step 22

Fold the top corner down to meet the bottom edge, then unfold.

Step 23

Fold the top corner down to meet the crease made in Step 22.

Step 24

Fold the top edge down along the crease made in Step 22.

Step 25

Tuck the edge of the top flap under the square.

Step 1

Start with the colored side facing up. Fold the paper in half vertically and horizontally, then unfold to create a cross-shaped crease.

Step 2

Fold the top edge down to meet the center crease.

Step 3

Turn the paper over.

Step 4

Fold the top corners down to meet the horizontal crease, then unfold.

Step 5

Fold the bottom edge up to the center crease.

Step 6

Turn the paper over.

Step 7

Unfold the top flap.

Step 8

Fold and unfold along the dotted lines, using the reference points as a guide. Align the left and right edges with the bottom edge.

Step 9

Fold and unfold the left and right edges to the center crease. Only crease the top two-thirds of the paper.

Step 10

Fold and unfold along the dotted lines, using the reference points as a guide. Align the bottom edges with the center crease.

Step 11

Collapse the right side of the model inwards along the creases from Steps 8 to 10.

Folding Tip: Start by folding along the vertical crease, then push the bottom part upward. If you’re using double-sided red and white paper, the lower red square should cover the middle white square.

Step 12

Repeat Step 11 on the left side.

Step 13

Turn the model over.

Step 14

Fold down only the top flap along the dotted line, using the existing crease.

Step 15

Using the existing creases, open out the bottom layers.

Folding Tip: Hold the top part of the model between your index and middle fingers, and position your thumbs at the bottom corners. Push the layers upward until the bottom edge aligns with the second horizontal line from the top. Refer to the diagram or video for clarification.

Step 16

Fold the four top corners inward to shape the heart.

Folding Tip: Start by folding the center corners first, then move on to the side corners. This makes it easier to achieve a balanced heart shape. For extra precision, use a ruler to align the folds neatly.

Step 17

Fold the bottom edge up to the center line, only folding the top layer.

Step 18

Fold the strip created in Step 17 in half, then unfold Steps 17 and 18.

Step 19

Rotate the model 180°.

Step 20

Fold the top layer down.

Step 21

Fold each section from Steps 17 and 18 in half, dividing them into 1/8th sections.

Folding Tip: Carefully pleat the white area as you fold, using the diagram to guide your mountain and valley folds. This requires precision, but it’s worth it. So, take your time. If you’re unsure, watch the video for additional help.

Step 22

Rotate the model 180°.

Step 23

Press the center and spread the layers outward to form the wings.

Folding Tip: Experiment with different angles to customize the wings.

Turn the model over.
