Step 1

Start with the white side facing up in a diamond position. Fold in half along the vertical diagonal, then unfold.

Step 2

Fold the left and right edges to meet the vertical centerline.

Step 3

Fold the bottom corner up along the dashed line. The bottom corner should land slightly above the horizontal line where the layers meet.

Step 4

Fold the top corner down to meet the bottom corner from Step 3.

Step 5

Fold the left and right corners inward. There is no exact reference point, just fold them evenly and symmetrically.

Step 6

Fold the top left and right corners inward. Again, there is no specific reference point, just keep both sides even.

Step 7

Turn the model over.

Folding tip: Gently fold the model in half to check if your folds are symmetric and adjust as needed.

And that’s it, your origami Easter egg is ready.

It’s a very easy and satisfying model to fold, and the final result is light, elegant, and surprisingly sturdy. As you can see in the photo, the curved petals tuck into one another in a gentle spiral that catches the light beautifully. It makes a lovely decoration for a gift, a table setting, or even a handmade card.

Origami Floral Swirls Step-by-Step Instructions

• Difficulty: Easy – Beginner level 2
• Folding time: 20 minutes

Paper Preparation

Step 1

Cut out a circle from a rectangular or square sheet of paper.

Folding tip: You can either draw a circle with a circular template, such as a plate or a pair of compasses, and then cut along the circle. You can also use a cutter compass as I do in the video.

Step 2

Fold the circle in half vertically, then unfold.

Step 3

Fold the paper in half horizontally, then unfold.

Step 4

Cut along the creases you just made to divide the paper into four pieces.

Folding One Unit

Step 1

Make a fold-line that connects the bottom left and right corners, then unfold.

Step 2

Turn the paper over.

Step 3

Fold in half vertically, then unfold.

Step 4

Fold the left edge to the horizontal line. Then unfold.

Step 5

Fold the right edge to the horizontal line. Then unfold.

Step 6

Begin to rabbit-ear fold the corner. Then, fold the left corner behind the right corner and flatten the paper.

The Completed Unit

Assembly

Step 1

Take two units and rotate the left unit 90° counterclockwise.

Step 2

Slide the corner of the right unit under the edge of the left unit so that it touches the circled corner.

Folding tip: You can use paper clips to stop the units from moving. This will make the assembly and folding steps easier.

Step 3

Rotate the units 90° counterclockwise.

Step 4

Take another unit and repeat Step 2. Make sure the circled point is above the new unit.

Step 5

Rotate the units 90° counterclockwise.

Step 6

Take another unit and repeat step 2 twice simultaneously. The new unit slides into the pocket on the left and the corner of the first unit slides into the pocket of the new unit.

Step 7

Fold the right edge down to meet the vertical centerline (one layer only). Then unfold.

Step 8

Fold the top edge down to meet the horizontal centerline (one layer only).

Step 9

Fold the left edge down to meet the vertical centerline (one layer only).

Step 10

Fold the bottom edge down to meet the horizontal centerline (one layer only).

Step 11

Lift the indicated flap slightly, then fold along existing creases made in Step 7.

Step 12

Curl the flaps slightly to make the model more three-dimensional.

Fold the top edges inward to meet the centerline.

Step 3

Fold the top corner down to the line created in Step 2, where the colored and white sides of the paper meet. Then, unfold.

Step 4

Fold the top corner at the back of the model along the crease made in Step 3.

Step 5

Fold the top left and right corners inward along the dotted lines.

Step 6

Turn the paper over.

Step 7

Pinch the bottom corner of the top flap and flatten it along the dotted line while folding the right side to the back.

Step 8

Fold the bottom right corner up to the reference point. Crease well, then unfold.

Step 9

Inside reverse fold along the creases made in Step 9.

Step 10

Fold the bottom corner of the top flap up to the reference point located under the beak. Repeat this step on the back side.

Step 11

Fold the wing along the dotted line, then repeat on the back. The crease should run from the bottom angle to the top edge of the wing.

Step 12

Mountain fold the bottom corner inward along the dotted line, then repeat on the back.

Step 13

Gently open the flaps at the top of the model in opposite directions. Pull slightly to flatten the inner flap and create a hollow space inside.

Cut along the crease made in Step 2 to create a strip for the handle.

How to Fold the Handle

Step 1

Start with the white side of the paper strip facing up. Fold it in half horizontally, then unfold.

Step 2

Fold the left and right edges inward to the centerline.

Step 3

Fold the strip in half horizontally along the crease made in Step 1.

How to Fold the Basket Case

Step 1

Start with the colored side facing up, positioned like a diamond. Fold and unfold both diagonals.

Step 2

Turn the paper over.

Step 3

Fold the paper in half from side to side in both directions, then unfold.

Step 4

Collapse the paper along the creases from Steps 1 and 3 to form a Square Base.

Step 5

Fold the top layer’s top corner down to meet the bottom corner.

Step 6

Fold the top layer’s bottom corner up to the centerline.

Step 7

Lift the flap created in Step 6 and tuck the handle behind it. The handle width should align with the crease made in Step 6.

Step 8

Hold the handle in place, then fold the top two layers of the colored flap (from Step 6) in half to secure the handle.

Step 9

Repeat Steps 5 to 8 on the other side.

Folding Tip: If your handle does not extend over the flaps pointing up, place it between them so it reaches the folding area.

Step 10

Fold and unfold the top layer’s left and right corners to the centerline.

Step 11

Reverse the creases made in Step 10 inward.

Step 12

Repeat Steps 10 and 11 on the other side.

Step 13

Place your index fingers behind the handles on both sides and gently open the basket, flattening the bottom.

Step 14

Fold the two flaps sticking out of the basket inward along the dotted lines.

Folding Tip: To make this step easier, first fold them outward, then reverse the fold inward.

Choose your favorite patterned paper to make each butterfly uniquely yours. Smaller papers (around 3×3 in or 7.5×7.5 cm) also work wonderfully if you’d like to add these butterflies to your indoor plants. They’ll appear ready to flutter off the leaves!

Origami Butterfly Step-by-Step Instructions

• Difficulty: Easy – Beginner Level 2
• Folding time: 5 minutes

Step 1

Start with the colored side of the paper facing up. Fold and unfold in half both horizontally and vertically.

Step 2

Turn the paper over.

Step 3

Fold and unfold both diagonals.

Step 4

Collapse the paper as shown on the diagram using the existing creases, making the Waterbomb base.

Step 5

Fold the top layer ́s corners up to meet the top corner.

Step 6

Turn the model over.

Step 7

Gently lift the bottom corner of the top layer up. Then, make a soft fold at the center without flattening the sides. Make sure the corner goes over the edge of the paper.

Step 8

Fold the top corner tip down over the top edge and crease firmly. Then, turn the model over.

Step 9

Gently fold the wings toward you to help shape the butterfly and lock the model in place.

Folding tip: Depending on the type of paper you’re using, the model may not hold together properly. If that happens, you can add a little glue under the top flap to keep everything secure.

Traditional Origami Dragonfly Step-by-Step Instructions

• Material: This traditional model requires the use of scissors

Step 1

Start with the colored side of the paper facing up. Fold and unfold both diagonals.

Step 2

Turn the paper over. Then, fold and unfold in half both horizontally and vertically.

Step 3

Rotate the paper 45° clockwise. Then, collapse the paper as shown on the diagram using the existing creases, making a square base.

Fold and unfold along the dotted lines. Then, repeat on the other side of the model.

Step 5

Fold and unfold the lower corners of the top flap upwards along the dotted lines.

Step 8

Using the crease created in Step 6, open each top flap at the bottom of the model. Pinch the center of each flap on both sides, then fold it behind the flap above it. The model should now resemble a four-pointed star.

Step 9

Bring the top edges towards the center. This movement will pull the layer located behind to the front. Fold the edges from top to bottom and squash the top layer, as shown in the diagram.

Step 10

Turn the model over. Then, mirror Step 8 on the bottom part of the model.

Step 11

Mountain fold the model in half, from left to right.

Step 12

Rotate the model 90° counterclockwise. Then, fold and unfold along the dotted line.

Step 13

Using the creases created in Step 11, make an outside reverse fold.

Step 14

Open the right flap created in Step 12. Fold in small sections from the bottom corner to the top to shape the head.

Folding tip: To make this step easier, you can turn the model so it faces you. You’re going to fold from bottom to top, similar to a rolling motion.

Step 15

Cut both wings in half vertically.

Step 16

Fold the wings down along the dotted lines, adjusting them so they are perpendicular to the body.

Step 17

Fold each tip of the wings along the dotted lines. Then, inside reverse fold each of them towards the center.

Traditional Origami Balloon Rabbit Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1

Start with the colored side of the paper facing up. Fold in half both horizontally and vertically, then unfold.

Step 2

Turn the paper over. Fold and unfold along the diagonals.

Step 3

Collapse along the dotted lines to create a Waterbomb base.

Step 4

Bring the bottom corners up and fold the top layers’ bottom edges to the centerline.

Step 5

Folding tip: Feel free to play around with the angle of these folds to create different designs for the rabbit ears, whether you want them to be thinner or larger.

Open the flaps created in the previous step to give them their final rabbit ear shapes.

While gently pushing the top corner of the model with one finger, blow air into the bottom hole to inflate the model into a balloon shape.

Side note: For the video, we shaped the model by pushing the opposite corners. But you might find it easier and more fun to inflate the model instead.

This origami snail is an interesting project that fits the season’s mood, with the soft rain outside and the golden leaves scattered on the ground.

While this paper snail is suitable for beginners, it’s definitely more challenging than other beginner models, like the origami leaf.

The step-by-step instructions will guide you through interesting folds. You’ll be swirling the paper to create the antennae and stretching the paper to make the snail’s shell.

Origami Snail Step-by-Step Instructions

• Difficulty: Easy – Beginner Level 5
• Folding time: 15 minutes

Step 1

Start with the colored side of the paper facing up. Fold and unfold both diagonals.

Step 2

Turn the paper over and fold it horizontally and vertically in half. Then unfold.

Step 3

Rotate the paper 45 degrees clockwise. Then, fold along the dotted lines using the existing creases to create a square base.

Step 4

Fold and unfold the right flap to the center line.

Folding tip: If you’re already familiar with squash folds, you can skip this step.

Step 5

Open the right flap and squash fold using the creases made in Step 4.

Fold This Snail with Our Free Pattern!

Repeat Steps 4 and 5 three more times on all sides.

Fold the right flap along the dotted line so the angle is reduced by about one-third.

Once again, fold the top left flap in half so its left edge lines up with the centerline.

Turn the model over and repeat Steps 7 to 10.

Repeat Steps 7 to 10 on both sides. This time:

• On the left flap, fold it into thirds by making two equal folds. Each fold turns in about one-third of the angle.

• On the right flap, fold it into thirds too, but do it by folding in half twice.

Step 14

Flip the top right flap over to the left side, then repeat on the other side.

Step 15

Now focus on the top of the model. Carefully make an inside reverse fold on each of the two side flaps. These will become the snail’s antennae.

Step 16

On each side, tuck the two center flaps inward so they’re hidden inside the model.

Step 17

Gently lift the snail’s antennae so they point forward, in front of the head. Then, fold the bottom corner upward along the dotted line. This will make the shell stand upright.

Step 18

Swirl and shape the antennae however you like.

Step 19

Gently open and stretch the vertical layers until they puff out like a balloon. This will form the snail’s shell.

Folding tip: Go slowly here. Use both hands to shape the shell evenly without tearing the paper. A little patience makes a big difference!

Fold in half diagonally the other way and unfold. Turn the paper over.

Step 3

Fold in half vertically and unfold.

Step 4

Fold in half horizontally and unfold. Turn the paper over.

Step 5

Collapse the model into a Water-bomb Base.

Step 6

Fold the bottom corners of the top layer up to the center line.

Step 7

Turn the model over and repeat step 6.

Step 8

Flip one flap to the right in the front and back.

Step 9

Fold the flaps of the top layers slightly past the center line.

Step 10

Open up the left ‘pocket’, and insert the right flap inside.

Step 11

Turn the model over and repeat steps 9-10.

Step 12

Fold and unfold the bottom section from both sides.

Step 13

Blow into the bottom hole to inflate and flatten the model. The bottom should be a square shape.

Folding tip: If the balloon doesn’t inflate, try pinching the top while blowing. If it still doesn’t work, gently flatten the bottom with one finger.

Step 14

Peel out all 4 outer layers to create the petals.
