Floral Swirls is a modular origami model designed by Madhura Gupta. It’s built from just one circle of paper, divided into four units, which interlock to form this smooth, flowing, pinwheel-like flower.

It’s a very easy and satisfying model to fold, and the final result is light, elegant, and surprisingly sturdy. As you can see in the photo, the curved petals tuck into one another in a gentle spiral that catches the light beautifully. It makes a lovely decoration for a gift, a table setting, or even a handmade card.

Origami Floral Swirls Step-by-Step Instructions

This traditional origami camellia is a beautiful model with a calm, meditative folding sequence. It starts with two simple steps that unlock a whole structure of helpful creases and reference points, making the rest of the model feel smooth and guided.

It’s easy to learn, but just challenging enough to be satisfying, making it a perfect fold for a quiet coffee break. The finished camellia has a lovely color change at the center.

With a few light squash folds, you can even open up the inner flaps and reveal a second, more subtle color change, echoing the flower’s pistils.

Origami Camellia Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Difficulty: Easy – Beginner Level 3
  • Folding time: 5 minutes

Recommended Paper

15×15 cm (6×6 in) Kami

Step 1

origami camelia paper fold step 1

Step 3

origami camelia diagram step 3

Fold the right edge to the diagonal crease. Use the reference point as a guide.

Step 4

origami camelia diagram step 4

Fold the top edge to the diagonal crease. Again, use the reference point as a guide.

Step 5

origami camelia diagram step 5

Fold the left edge over to where the layers overlap.

Step 6

origami camelia diagram step 6

Fold the top left corner to the right, using the reference point and existing creases as guides. You’ll need to reverse fold the bottom left part of the model.

Step 7

origami camelia diagram step 7

Fold the bottom flap upward along the existing creases. Align the edges, then squash fold.

Step 8

origami camelia diagram step 8

Repeat the same squash fold for the left flap.

Step 9

origami camelia diagram step 9

Repeat the same squash fold for the top flap.

Step 10

origami camelia diagram step 10

Untuck the flap located at the top right of the model and move it to the top.

Step 11

origami camelia diagram step 11

Fold the flap from Step 10 to the left using the existing creases as guides. Align the edges, then squash fold.

Step 12

origami camelia diagram step 12

Tuck all the triangle tips into the flaps underneath them.

Step 13

origami camelia diagram step 13

At the center, gently fold all corners outward.

🏵 Folding tip: You can lightly squash these new flaps to create a color change that looks like the center of a camellia (pistil).

The origami lotus is one of the most recognizable traditional models, symbolizing purity, renewal, and enlightenment. It has been folded for centuries in Japan and China and holds deep cultural significance, especially in Japan, where the lotus is linked to spirituality and beauty.

In this step-by-step tutorial, you’ll learn how to fold your own paper lotus flower with easy, beginner-friendly instructions. It’s a great project for relaxation, decoration, or even as a thoughtful handmade gift.

Grab your paper, and let’s start folding!

Traditional Origami Lotus Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Difficulty: Easy – Beginner Level 3
  • Folding time: 5-10 minutes

Recommended Paper

20×20 cm (8×8 in) tissue paper or any thin and soft paper, like mulberry.

If you don’t have any paper at home and don’t feel like waiting, I often use paper napkins for this model. They’re not perfectly square, so it makes the folding a bit more challenging, but the result is lovely and adds a nice touch to your table.

Step 1

origami lotus diagram step 1

Start with the white side facing up. Fold and unfold the paper in half vertically and horizontally.

Step 2

origami lotus diagram step 2

Fold all four corners of the paper to the center, using the creases from Step 1 as guides.

Step 3

origami lotus diagram step 3

Rotate the paper 45° clockwise.

Step 4

origami lotus diagram step 4

Fold all four corners to the center again.

Step 5

origami lotus diagram step 5

Rotate the paper 45° clockwise.

Step 6

origami lotus diagram step 6

Fold all four corners to the center one more time.

Step 7

origami lotus diagram step 7

Turn the model over.

Step 8

origami lotus diagram step 8

Fold all four corners to the center again.

🪷 Folding tip: Depending on its thickness, the paper might become harder to crease at this stage. For best results, we recommend using softer paper, like tissue or washi.

Step 9

origami lotus diagram step 9

Fold each corner inward along the dotted lines.

Step 10

origami lotus diagram step 10

Hold one small flap from Step 9 with one hand, and with the other hand, gently pull up and reverse the flap on the opposite side.

🪷 Folding tip: Be patient, as the paper may tear at this step. Mastering this part often takes several tries. Go slowly and guide the paper carefully.

Step 11

origami lotus paper fold step 11
origami lotus diagram step 11

Repeat Step 10 for each corner to form the first set of lotus petals. Once done, push up all the flaps created in Step 9 so they point upward.

Step 12

origami lotus diagram step 12

Turn the model over.

Step 13

origami lotus diagram step 13

Gently pull down and reverse all four flaps to create a new layer of petals.

Step 14

origami lotus diagram step 14

Fold the remaining flaps along the dotted lines to create the final layer of petals.

Step 15

origami lotus diagram step 15

Turn the model over.

Step 16

origami lotus diagram step 16

Shape the lotus by carefully bending the tops of the petals outward to give your flower a natural look.

🪷 The Completed Origami Lotus!

Congratulations on folding your very own origami lotus!

Want to take it a step further? Try folding a smaller lotus and placing it inside a larger one! The flower will have more petals, creating a beautiful, full-bloom effect—just like the lotus on the right side of the featured image.

Experiment with different paper colors and sizes to make unique variations.

Looking to create a rose out of paper? Today, I’ll walk you through creating your very own origami rose.

Unlike other origami roses, the traditional fractal rose features a repeating pattern that’s very interesting to fold and perfect for beginners.

Whether you want to add a unique touch to your paper art, home decor, surprise a loved one with a handmade gift, or simply enjoy a fun and creative activity, this origami project is perfect for you.

All you need is a single sheet of paper and a bit of dexterity.

Traditional Origami Fractal Rose Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Difficulty: Easy – Beginner Level 2
  • Folding time: 5-10 minutes

Recommended Paper

15×15 cm (6×6 in) Kami or Tant if you want more texture.

Step 1

origami rose paper fold step 1

Start with the white side of the paper facing up. Fold the paper in half vertically and horizontally, then unfold.

Step 2

origami rose paper fold step 2
origami rose paper fold step 2

Fold each corner inward to meet at the center point.

Step 3

Traditional Fractal Rose Diagram Step 3

Fold each corner inward to the center again.

Traditional Fractal Rose Diagram Step 4

Fold each corner inward to the center one last time.

Step 5

origami rose paper fold step 5
Traditional Fractal Rose Diagram Step 5

Fold the top layer of each flap outward along the dotted lines to form the first row of rose petals.

Step 6

origami rose paper fold step 6
Traditional Fractal Rose Diagram Step 6

To make the second layer of petals, fold each square flap in half, bringing the inner corners from the center to meet the first layer of petals.

Step 7

origami rose paper fold step 7
Traditional Fractal Rose Diagram Step 7

Repeat the same folds with the third layer of rose petals.

Step 8

origami rose paper fold step 8
Traditional Fractal Rose Diagram Step 8

Mountain fold the four outer corners toward the back of the model.

Step 9

origami rose paper fold step 9
Traditional Fractal Rose Diagram Step 9

Gently curl all the rose petals downward to give them a more natural shape

🌹 Folding tip: Use your fingertips or nails to curl the petals, or try a tool like a screwdriver or a thin pen for smoother curves. Use cylindrical tools of different diameters to match the petal size. Start curling from the center and work your way to the edges for the best effect!

The Completed Origami Rose! 🌹

origami rose paper fold completed
Traditional Fractal Rose Diagram Step 10

For this tutorial, I used paper with a white side because it’s easier to follow. But you can use double-sided paper with the same color on both sides for a better result. One side can also be yellowish to mimic the pistils in the central area.

You can play around with different paper textures to get a velvety feel similar to that of a rose.

Experiment with different paper sizes and repeat steps 3 and 4 more times. The larger your paper, the more petals your final model will have.

I hope you had a great time following this origami rose tutorial. We’d love to see your beautiful origami creations, so don’t hesitate to share them with us in the comments section!
