Step 1

Start with the white side facing up in a diamond position. Fold in half along the vertical diagonal, then unfold.

Step 2

Fold the left and right edges to meet the vertical centerline.

Step 3

Fold the bottom corner up along the dashed line. The bottom corner should land slightly above the horizontal line where the layers meet.

Step 4

Fold the top corner down to meet the bottom corner from Step 3.

Step 5

Fold the left and right corners inward. There is no exact reference point, just fold them evenly and symmetrically.

Step 6

Fold the top left and right corners inward. Again, there is no specific reference point, just keep both sides even.

Step 7

Turn the model over.

Folding tip: Gently fold the model in half to check if your folds are symmetric and adjust as needed.

Origami Basket Chick Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1

Start with the white side of the paper facing up. Fold it in half vertically, then unfold.

Step 2

Fold the top edges inward to meet the centerline.

Step 3

Fold the top corner down to the line created in Step 2, where the colored and white sides of the paper meet. Then, unfold.

Step 4

Fold the top corner at the back of the model along the crease made in Step 3.

Step 5

Fold the top left and right corners inward along the dotted lines.

Step 6

Turn the paper over.

Step 7

Pinch the bottom corner of the top flap and flatten it along the dotted line while folding the right side to the back.

Step 8

Fold the bottom right corner up to the reference point. Crease well, then unfold.

Step 9

Inside reverse fold along the creases made in Step 9.

Step 10

Fold the bottom corner of the top flap up to the reference point located under the beak. Repeat this step on the back side.

Step 11

Fold the wing along the dotted line, then repeat on the back. The crease should run from the bottom angle to the top edge of the wing.

Step 12

Mountain fold the bottom corner inward along the dotted line, then repeat on the back.

Step 13

Gently open the flaps at the top of the model in opposite directions. Pull slightly to flatten the inner flap and create a hollow space inside.

Paper Preparation

Step 1

Fold the paper in half horizontally, then unfold.

Step 2

Fold the right edge to the centerline, then unfold.

Step 3

Cut along the crease made in Step 2 to create a strip for the handle.

How to Fold the Handle

Step 1

Start with the white side of the paper strip facing up. Fold it in half horizontally, then unfold.

Step 2

Fold the left and right edges inward to the centerline.

Step 3

Fold the strip in half horizontally along the crease made in Step 1.

How to Fold the Basket Case

Step 1

Start with the colored side facing up, positioned like a diamond. Fold and unfold both diagonals.

Step 2

Turn the paper over.

Step 3

Fold the paper in half from side to side in both directions, then unfold.

Step 4

Collapse the paper along the creases from Steps 1 and 3 to form a Square Base.

Step 5

Fold the top layer’s top corner down to meet the bottom corner.

Step 6

Fold the top layer’s bottom corner up to the centerline.

Step 7

Lift the flap created in Step 6 and tuck the handle behind it. The handle width should align with the crease made in Step 6.

Step 8

Hold the handle in place, then fold the top two layers of the colored flap (from Step 6) in half to secure the handle.

Step 9

Repeat Steps 5 to 8 on the other side.

Folding Tip: If your handle does not extend over the flaps pointing up, place it between them so it reaches the folding area.

Step 10

Fold and unfold the top layer’s left and right corners to the centerline.

Step 11

Reverse the creases made in Step 10 inward.

Step 12

Repeat Steps 10 and 11 on the other side.

Step 13

Place your index fingers behind the handles on both sides and gently open the basket, flattening the bottom.

Step 14

Fold the two flaps sticking out of the basket inward along the dotted lines.

Folding Tip: To make this step easier, first fold them outward, then reverse the fold inward.

Choose your favorite patterned paper to make each butterfly uniquely yours. Smaller papers (around 3×3 in or 7.5×7.5 cm) also work wonderfully if you’d like to add these butterflies to your indoor plants. They’ll appear ready to flutter off the leaves!

Origami Butterfly Step-by-Step Instructions

• Difficulty: Easy – Beginner Level 2
• Folding time: 5 minutes

Step 1

Start with the colored side of the paper facing up. Fold and unfold in half both horizontally and vertically.

Step 2

Turn the paper over.

Step 3

Fold and unfold both diagonals.

Step 4

Collapse the paper as shown on the diagram using the existing creases, making the Waterbomb base.

Step 5

Fold the top layer ́s corners up to meet the top corner.

Step 6

Turn the model over.

Step 7

Gently lift the bottom corner of the top layer up. Then, make a soft fold at the center without flattening the sides. Make sure the corner goes over the edge of the paper.

Step 8

Fold the top corner tip down over the top edge and crease firmly. Then, turn the model over.

Step 9

Gently fold the wings toward you to help shape the butterfly and lock the model in place.

Folding tip: Depending on the type of paper you’re using, the model may not hold together properly. If that happens, you can add a little glue under the top flap to keep everything secure.

Traditional Origami Balloon Rabbit Step-by-Step Instructions

• Difficulty: Easy – Beginner Lvl 3
• Folding time: 5-10 minutes

Step 1

Start with the colored side of the paper facing up. Fold in half both horizontally and vertically, then unfold.

Step 2

Turn the paper over. Fold and unfold along the diagonals.

Step 3

Collapse along the dotted lines to create a Waterbomb base.

Step 4

Bring the bottom corners up and fold the top layers’ bottom edges to the centerline.

Step 5

Fold the left and right corners of the top flaps to the centerline.

Step 6

Folding tip: Feel free to play around with the angle of these folds to create different designs for the rabbit ears, whether you want them to be thinner or larger.

Open the flaps created in the previous step to give them their final rabbit ear shapes.

While gently pushing the top corner of the model with one finger, blow air into the bottom hole to inflate the model into a balloon shape.

Side note: For the video, we shaped the model by pushing the opposite corners. But you might find it easier and more fun to inflate the model instead.

Fold the top flap downwards.

Repeat steps 9-11 on the remaining 3 flaps.

Flip one flap to the left, on the front and back.

Rotate the model 180 degrees.

Fold the edges to the center line. Repeat behind.

Flip one flap over to the left, on the front and back.

Repeat step 15 on the front and back.

In Japanese culture, rabbits are often linked to cleverness and good fortune. They also appear in folklore connected to Tsukimi, the Moon Viewing festival, where the rabbit is said to live on the moon and spend its time pounding mochi.

This model works well for folders with a little experience. A few steps require careful shaping and are a good opportunity to practice squash folds and reverse folds while creating a lively rabbit shape.

Origami Rabbit Step-by-Step Instructions

• Difficulty: Easy – Beginner Level 4
• Folding time: 10 minutes

Step 1

Start with the white side of the paper facing up in a diamond position. Fold the top corner down to meet the bottom corner, making a horizontal diagonal crease.

Step 2

Fold both top left and right corners down to meet the bottom corner.

Step 3

Fold the bottom left and right edges in to meet the centerline.

Step 4

Open the top-right flap and squash it down. Line up the diagonal edge with the centerline as you flatten it.

Step 5

Repeat Step 4 on the left side.

Step 6

Fold the model in half by bringing the right side behind the left side.

Step 7

Rotate the model 30° counterclockwise.

Step 8

Flip the top flap at the bottom upward along the dotted line to form the first origami rabbit’s ear.

Step 9

Repeat Step 8 on the other side.

Step 10

Fold the ear’s right edge inward to meet the point where the head and ear intersect. Then, repeat on the other side.

Step 11

Crimp fold the head over the ears by gently pushing down the top corner (the rabbit’s nose). Make sure the two reference points meet.

Folding tip: Don’t crease the fold all the way down to the rabbit’s legs. Keep it a little curved around the feet. That way, your origami rabbit will be able to stand up on its own!

Step 12

Make a small Crimp fold to form the rabbit’s tail. Start by making a Pleat fold along the dashed lines, then unfold. Slightly open the layers, then reverse fold the tail in and out to form the Crimp.

Folding Tip: This is the most challenging fold in the model. If it feels tricky, watch the video to see exactly how the Crimp fold is formed.

Folding Tip: Once your Crimp fold is done, you can tweak it to make the tail shorter or longer. Play with the angle until the tail looks just right.

Step 13

Reverse fold the tip of the nose along the dotted line to shape the rabbit’s face.

Step 14

Gently open up the ears to give them a fuller shape.

Traditional Origami Iris Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1

Start with the white side of the paper facing up. Fold in half and unfold.

Step 2

Fold in half the other way and unfold. Turn the paper over.

Step 3

Fold and unfold along the diagonals.

Step 4

Rotate the paper 1/4 of a turn and turn it over.

Step 5

Collapse along the dotted lines to create a Square Base.

Step 6

Squash fold one of the flaps.

Step 7

Flip the paper over and repeat step 6.

Step 8

Bring the top flap to the left and repeat step 6. Turn the paper over and repeat this step for the remaining flap.

Step 9

Fold and unfold to the center line.

Step 10

Petal Fold the top layer, using the folds from step 9.

Step 11

Fold the top flap downwards.

Step 12

Swivel fold the left and right flaps out without disrupting the top triangular flap.

Folding tip: The bottom edge of the top triangular flap should align with the second crease.

Repeat steps 9-12 on the remaining 3 flaps.

Flip one flap to the left on the front and back.

Step 15

Rotate the model.

Step 16

Fold the edges to the center line.

Step 17

Repeat step 16 on the remaining 3 flaps.

Step 18

Fold down on the dotted line on all 4 sides, opening up the iris petals.

Once folded, the hen stands upright and looks great as part of a festive table display or tucked among some Easter treats.

We used a sheet of paper with yellow on one side and red on the other to make ours, but it also works really well with red and white paper.

If you’re using red origami paper, start folding with the red side facing up. This way, the red will appear on the top of the hen’s head (the comb), and the body will stay white.

Pick your favorite paper, and let’s get started!

Traditional Origami Chicken Step-by-Step Instructions

• Difficulty: Easy – Beginner Level 3
• Folding time: 5-10 minutes

Step 1

Start with the white side of the paper facing up, positioned like a diamond. Fold vertically across the diagonal, then unfold.

Note: This color will make the chicken’s comb! So, if you’re using red and white paper, start with the red side up.

Step 2

Fold the paper in half diagonally from bottom to top.

Step 3

Fold the left edge down to meet the bottom edge. Make only a light pinch on the right edge to mark the spot, then unfold.

Step 4

Fold the right corner up to meet the pinch made in Step 3. Again, make only a light pinch on the right edge, then unfold.

Step 5

Bring both the left and right corners up to meet the top corner and fold along the dotted lines.

Step 6

Fold the bottom corner up to meet the pinch made in Step 4. Crease only from the centerline to the right edge, then unfold.

Step 7

Fold the left side of the model to the back along the vertical diagonal.

Step 8

Fold the bottom left edge up to meet the crease made in Step 6. Crease well, then unfold.

Step 9

Using the crease from Step 8, make an inside reverse fold to form the chicken’s feet.

Step 10

Bring the middle of the top flap’s right edge (the pinch you made in Step 3) down to the bottom corner of the left edge. Squash fold along the dotted lines to form the first wing.

Step 11

Turn the model over.

Step 12

Repeat Step 10 on this side to create the second wing. Align the wings carefully so they match. Then, turn the model over.

Step 13

Fold the top corner down along the dotted line. Crease well, then unfold. This will form the beak.

Folding tip: You can play with the folding angle to create different beak lengths for your origami chicken.

Step 14

Push the top corner down and make an inside reverse fold along the crease you made in Step 13.

Step 15

Unfold just the top layer from Step 14. This flap will become the chicken’s comb.

Step 16

Fold the top corner down along the dotted line, aligning the left edges. Crease well and unfold.

Step 17

Pull the top corner outward and make an outside reverse fold along the crease made in Step 16.

All Done! Your Origami Chicken Is Ready to Strut!

Folding tip: If your chicken does not stand up well, open the feet flap, adjust its angle, and flatten it a bit.

Shaping tip: Gently curve the wings for a more natural look.

Well done, your origami hen is finished!
